The Way We Work: excellence in consulting

Denise Skidmore

Denise has extensive experience in education and has worked in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. In the earlier part of her career she taught in both primary and secondary schools and later became the founding principal of a large, innovative and highly successful primary school that had a strong focus on child-centred learning and technology.

Denise has substantial experience in designing and evaluating mathematics curriculum materials and professional development strategies for teachers and principals. She has co-written and led major systemic change projects in numeracy in Western Australia, including the First Steps in Mathematics Project, as well as lectured to under-graduate teachers.

During the past eight years Denise has held interim senior management positions, supporting failed inner-London education authorities who were in intervention. As Deputy Director in Southwark she played a key role in bringing about rapid and sustained improvement, such that the local authority was recognised as the most improved in the country over a three-year period. Denise also played a key role in establishing a Children’s Trust in Southwark, which brought together health, social care and education services for children and families.

A key aspect of her recent work in the UK has focused on supporting minority ethnic participation and achievement in two of the most ethnically diverse London education authorities. She has also been responsible for redefining policy and provision for pupils with special educational needs so that they are more effectively included and able to benefit from major capital strategies such as Building Schools for the Future.

Denise is presently working in the US with Cambridge Education, reviewing education districts in the State of Connecticut. The focus of this work is to consider how the districts and the State can more effectively support and challenge schools in raising the achievement of students, particularly those from minority groups.
