Dame Anna Hassan

Anna Hassan has worked in Hackney for over 28 years. She has held several senior posts in Primary Schools. She was then appointed as substantive head of Millfields Community School in November 1993 where she still is. She is now Executive Head of Millfields School. This post has come about through innovation in succession planning.

Millfields Community School & Children’s Centre is a truly inclusive extended day community school in the true sense of the word.

Anna Hassan is of Italian parentage, born and brought up in Northern Ireland. She attended St. Patrick’s School in Banbridge, went to school in Italy for over a year and then attended The Assumption Convent Grammar School, Ballynahinch for 8 years. She has in-depth experience of the business world. She has worked hard to raise the standards & expectations of the teachers, pupils, parents and the local community.

The school has just had one of the first Inspections under the new OFSTED standards. It was inspected on 18th September 2006 and deemed to be outstanding.

Anna mentors and support new heads in Hackney and elsewhere, she works closely with the British Council and Overseas Networks. The school has links with China, Russia, Holland, USA and Kenya and works closely with and is a Champion School of UNICEF. She is a Governor Trainer and works with the DfES on Education Committees and Local Education Authorities to support Newly Qualified Teachers, Head’s and others.

She is the Head teacher Rep. on the SACRE Committee, and represents the heads on the Education Forum. She is also on the Early Years Partnership and the EMAS Steering Group and a Governor of a Community College.

Anna is passionate about supporting pupils to learn how to become lifelong learners. Personal, Social & Moral Education is a core curriculum area throughout the school. Parental involvement and community development are highly important issues on her school improvement plan.

The school has recently been re awarded ‘Investors in People’ status with staff training a key point on every agenda.

Anna loves her work. She is hard working, with a sense of humour. Anna trained as an classical singer and as a musician.

She uses performing and creative arts as a means for supporting pupils in becoming confident in their ability and raising standards.

Anna has been very happily married for 36 years and has a 34 -year-old son. Her husband is a Turkish Cypriot. She has a 2 ½ year old grand daughter called Gracie who is the joy of her life.

She is a committed Christian and works with the local Turkish Community to support their needs.

She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in November 2005 from The University of Gloucestershire and is a member of the University Court.

She was made Dame Commander of the British Empire in the 2006 New Year Honours List for services to education.
