SEC Conference 2007

The Way We Work: excellence in consulting

John Atkins

John Atkins started his working life as a maths teacher (not counting three months testing sugar beet in a laboratory in Cambridge) and then moved into local authority education administration in the days when it was a Good Thing. He held schools posts in Leicestershire (home of the Leicestershire Plan) and Derbyshire before identifying enhanced career opportunities in local authority further education administration.

He was FE officer for Sunderland City Council when the Government took the FE colleges away from local authority management, so worked next for the Manpower Services Commission for two years before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers (then Coopers and Lybrand) as an education consultant. He started his own consultancy practice in 2000, while doing a full time MBA that he hoped might have led to a career change, but has nevertheless remained an education consultant ever since.
