The SEC Joins UKFIET
by Bill Rigby
The UK Forum for International Education and Training (UKFIET) has been in existence for over a decade, as a loose affiliation of academics and other practitioners in international education. The SEC has been represented at UKFIET for much of this time - John Mann, a founder member of the SEC, was our first representative. Recently they have reorganised themselves on a more formal footing, drawn up a constitution and actively recruited members. We ourselves have therefore formalised the SEC’s link by committing the modest £75 annual membership. UKFIET links public, private, voluntary, commercial and non-commercial organisations, and we are pleased to be a part of it.
SEC members will be kept in touch with the Forum’s activities through this newsletter. The main project this year is the 8th UKFIET "Oxford" International Conference on Education and Development, LEARNING AND LIVELIHOOD which will take place from 13-15 September 2005. The Forum also organises regular meetings and discussions on education policy issues, for which our membership will be granted concessionary rates.
The web address is www.ukfiet.org, where you can see a full description of UKFIET goals. A UKFIET newsletter has also just been launched which covers international issues and forthcoming events.
We are very keen to hear your views on the whole issue of affiliation, and how far the society would like to see it extended. We would like you to join the discussion and help to develp the SEC policy in this area. There are 3 key questions for consideration:
- Should the committee set aside a budget for affiliation by the SEC with other other bodies? (at this stage the committee is considering a budget of £200 for this year);
- Have you an organisation which you would like to suggest;
- Would you be willing in principle to be nominated to become a trustee of an organisation to which we may affiliate?
The 2008 SEC Conference takes place on Friday 21 November at RSA House, London. Further details soon.
